In 1995, in my twenty-second year, I was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis. At that time, I had severe diplopia, ptosis, dysphagia, bilateral paresis of the lateral head of my triceps muscles, weakness and paresis also in my abdominal and iliopsoas muscles. I was diagnosed with three tests - physostigmine ocular test, the single fiber test, and the blood test for antibodies commonly found in myasthenia gravis. All tests were positive for myasthenia gravis. I was told, along with everyone else who receives this diagnosis, that the disease I had was incurable. I was also told it was progressive, I would need to be on some form of medication for the rest of my life. I was told the different medications might not work fully and that further, more aggressive medications and surgeries might be necessary - thymectomy and weekly blood transfusions were possible and often employed in a desperate attempt to help the people suffering from myasthenia gravis.
I was also told that the disease was idiopathic, meaning that the doctors had no clue why it began. Having no clue why it begins, conventional medicine does not take proper action to heal this disease, and the medical means taken to combat the disease aren't always effective. In conventional medicine, the whole disease is shrouded in mystery. For instance, why do many people, after having the very invasive thymectomy procedure, relapse a year (or less) or two later, with more severe symptoms than what they had earlier? Why do people stop responding to the mestinon and need high doses of corticosteroids? I asked myself all of these questions before proceeding with the conventional treatments. I took mestinon for one week and stopped promptly after that, because I didn't feel "right" on the drug. I felt depressed, suppressed, low, and "blocked" on the drug.
Since that time, I have found many answers, and they do not lie in conventional medicine, which is still in the dark with this disease. The answers lie in alternative medicine and the philosophy of holistic medicine, which explains that the body and mind are not separate - that when the body is ill, then there is illness or imbalance that exist in the mind and emotions of the person. I have been on no medication, have had no surgical procedures and have simply and successfully used various forms of alternative medicine which have enabled me to continue playing soccer, hockey, golf, and competing internationally in karate competitions.
In holistic medicine, there is a lot of hope for people suffering from this disease and other diseases that conventional doctors have deemed incurable. This disease is only incurable when only conventional medical means are taken. Louis Klein, a skilled homeopath and first rate teacher, with over 25 years practicing, has cured several cases of myasthenia gravis which are verifiable and continue to be symptom free years after the homeopathic treatment. I have begun helping people suffering from myasthenia gravis in my own practice. As the treatment moves forward toward improvement and I establish a good connection and a deep understanding of my patients, I encourage them to come off all conventional drugs and treatments, as I have found in this and other diseases, that the medical drugs and treatments only act in the opposite direction, away from healing and a lasting cure because they suppress symptoms and do not get to the root of the disease. When people are severely sick, or they do not have enough energy to heal from within, then I do not suggest coming off the drugs until they are able to go through the healing process, which requires a certain amount of vitality.
In holistic medicine, the root of the disease is different for each person suffering from a disease. One hundred people suffering from migraine headaches have one hundred different roots, or causes of their disease, and the same is true for myasthenia gravis. I published a book, titled The Revolution of Naturopathic Medicine, where I explain how incorrect, stressful thinking in the mind leads to disease in the body. In simple terms, the body reflects the chronically held thoughts and beliefs in the mind. In myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease, the body's immune system is attacking its own body. Most often, in cases of myasthenia gravis, we therefore see the person attacking themselves in their thinking. Whether it be perfectionism, self-loathing, or being extremely hard on the self for whatever reason, the cases of MG I have seen, have had these elements where the person was attacking themselves on some mental or emotional level. The hopefulness, therefore, in treating this disease alternatively, lies in addressing the root of the problem, which lies in the mind and emotions of the person. Psychotherapy, counseling, homeopathy, acupuncture, meditation, core-belief work, and other forms of healing medicine that can address the root of the disease will therefore be very beneficial and can single-handedly, without conventional treatment, lead to the improvement and eventual cure of the myasthenic person. I have also found good nutrition to be very important in the treatment of this disease and all other diseases.
